This blog will be closed as of April 16. I can just no longer justify months, while being technically unemployed, to keep working to get some cooperation from the gang at Reddit to let me have a fair voice in the community. Anyone who worked closely with me or who saw how things operated behind the scenes on r/trees, knows just how hard I worked and how much time and energy and soul damn it I put making Trees and Gone Wild into two incredible social media success stories over a period of three years. Now it’s time to move on to more important things.
Over the past three months I’ve neglected my family, friends, my body to such a degree that I feel like a shadow of the person I once was. I’ve been through Hell and back. That’s why I need to give up this blog. I had stalkers from the Internet, anonymous people from Reddit threatening to kill me, and people who used my misery and suffering as some sort of free publicity vis-à-vis power grab vis-à-vis karma party. If there is any real life sense of karma then well then I guess it will pan out like a pox. But seriously for a second, I couldn’t be more grateful for the business or social media networking and work experience I’ve gained over the last three years. It’s been an extraordinary up and down experience. Scroll down on this blog further if you wish to see some accomplishments.
A final note and some background on why I’ve decided to close this blog next week. Frankly, it has to do with being pigeonholed. PenguinKenny, the mod who’s now running the show at r/trees, had practically zero involvement with Trees while moderating prior to January ’12. He has worked rabidly over the past few months to block everything I’ve tried to do. He has stood up against every vision that I originally had for Trees. Yet he has moved full steam ahead with his projects. I attempted to work together with him on numerous occasions. From talking with him he seems entirely focused on what he wants to do. Even when he promised to link to my blog, he broke that promise citing how it would affect his own interests so he better try to cover-up everything. I envisioned Trees to be about culture and education. Period. The business partnerships that I formed with people were supposed to be a means to that goal. But it seems now that the business in itself is the main goal for “PK”. He can have it. What happens from here on out is on him. I don’t want it. The community used to have a sense of warmth to it. That was part of the culture that I wanted to create and radiate to the world.
Hugs and Nugs, Keep fappy, Maybe see you at a meet-up one of these days,
- cinsere

[17:31] Alaskent Dad: so we set up a huge affiliates page by a few reddit ads a month
[17:32] Alaskent Dad: and get a sidebar link
[17:38] Alaskent Dad: Vape world got so many hits at their online store during the mflb giveaways it crashed their server
[17:42] Alaskent Dad: Front page with sale items and links to many stores in the sidebar
[17:48] Alaskent Dad: I would rather put efforts into promoting an online Ent Mall than trying to get links to face book and twitter
[17:51] Alaskent Dad: I think it could be a good thing
[17:51] Alaskent Dad: can I have a small % of profits?
[18:00] Alaskent Dad: If we have reddit ads we can link and we can do give aways to get announcement bar space
[18:01] Alaskent Dad: I kind of have already got some of this ok’d by other mods
[18:02] Alaskent Dad: just got to make sure they can’t trace any of it to us directly
[18:11] Alaskent Dad: Yes a few of their $30 ads
[18:13] Alaskent Dad: I brought up setting up some sponsors giveaways in the forums
[18:14] Alaskent Dad: PenguinKenny was all for it
[18:15] Alaskent Dad: sidebar might be a little trickier but I think it doable
[18:18] Alaskent Dad: I would love to know the details!
[18:18] Alaskent Dad: He set up the script that ran their giveaway
[18:19] Alaskent Dad: next I hear their setting up the pod cast and PenguinKenny posted that VapeWorld was going to sponsor them
[18:21] Alaskent Dad: Also, VapeWorld said they’d like to sponsor the show, in that they’d get some ad space on the website and they’d offer some prizes for giveaways.
[18:22] Alaskent Dad: Copy paste above
[18:32] Alaskent Dad: Anyway I’ve gotta get offline head is killing me again, think on it and we will see what we can do

[03:28] Alaskent Dad: Taking over as lead mod is one of the most stressful things I have experienced in life
[03:29] Alaskent Dad: I had jealousy and a power struggle from the other mods from day one
[03:30] Alaskent Dad: If I post this the way it is then I will be right back to bicker and fighting with the mod team
[03:30] Alaskent Dad: bickering
[04:56] Alaskent Dad: With the clicking of two buttons I can be free and no longer a mod ar/trees
[04:56] Alaskent Dad: quit
[05:26] Alaskent Dad: I wish we not added PenguinKenny back as mod in many ways
[05:27] Alaskent Dad: My being made lead mod the way it came about caused a lot of mistrust and jealousy
[05:28] Alaskent Dad: PenguinKenny was exerting himself back when the sopa blackout was being discussed
[05:33] Alaskent Dad: “Why does AD become lead mod though? I don’t really mind, seeing as I consider all mods equal and AD not my superior, but still.” PenguinKenny
05:34] Alaskent Dad: “By lead, we mean he’s got the top spot. Can’t be removed and such If that’s all then that’s fine, but it seemed to me he was speaking as if he had higher authority.” PenguinKenny
[05:34] Alaskent Dad: “While I don’t deny that you are a good moderator or worthy of “head mod”, your position as my superior won’t be something that I acknowledge” PenguinKenny
[05:37] Alaskent Dad: “I have been helping vaypurist of vapeworld.com every day for about 2 weeks, making sure the raffle was going to work fine” PenguinKenny
[05:51] Alaskent Dad: PK is looking for a way to remove me imho
[05:52] Alaskent Dad: I would love to remove 3 or 4 mods
[05:53] Alaskent Dad: I did remove colieb
[05:53] Alaskent Dad: someone added him back

Accomplishments from the last year
0. Creator of the lovable r/trees (Trees) on October 15, 2009
..and the infamous r/gonewild (Gone Wild) earlier that year
1. I’ve dealt with censorship on several levels. When Conde Nest decided to censor Just Say Now (http://justsaynow.
2. Helped give rise to the Scumbag Steve and Good Guy Greg memes through Trees.
3. Together with the Communications Director of NORML, Mr. Erik Altieri, I worked with to promote “the cannabis petition” on Trees and it ended up being the #1 most signed petition on the White House’s “We the People” public petition web site. https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/
4. Part of the beauty with Trees was coming up with a whole new language in which to be able to express this unique kind of friendly online culture. I was the originator of much of the language: “Trees”, “go wild”, “Ents”, “uptoke”, the number system (for indicating highness) [8] [10] along with catch-phrases and one-liners like “the friendliest place on the Internet”, and much much more. I did copious amounts of graphic design work (though I’m not a graphic designer by trade) and set up several web sites for the community off of Reddit (which are no longer used). I was always editing and updating the communities to the appeal of the community and for recruiting new community members / subscribers. Trees was referred to as “Cannabis Culture 2.0″ at Hempfest.
5. I helped launched an ecosystem of businesses on r/trees by creating and forming partnerships. I was required to negotiate these partnerships. These ranged from entrepreneurs to bigger companies who were part of the community at large and interested in making inroads with integration into the community for business purposes. My job was providing them with advertising, coordinating their contests / promotions, helping them integrate with the community, and additional consulting and support.
6. I worked with many good causes pro bono. I helped Sensible Washington build their campaign on Reddit, including /r/sensiblewashington, which became a centerpiece of moneybombs via social media while also for galvanizing support and awareness. I worked with others as well including the Arizona medical marijuana campaign (which passed), Ohio and Florida MMJ campaigns in 2011, Prop 19 in California in 2009, and more. I helped them gain traction on Reddit and other social media.
7. I set-up the largest gift exchange of its kind via “Secret SEnta” (legal products). Afterward, I worked with one of my business partners to help “re-gift” anyone who signed up but who hadn’t received a gift.
8. Together with the community, I helped pull off a large April Fools Day prank by converting the r/trees to community a web site about “real Trees and botanics” for several days around April 1 2011. It was an amazing orchestrated transformation that occurred very quickly.
9. Building what I referred to as “focus forums” like r/ents, r/treesnews, and more that were envisioned and designed to be completely commercial and ad free.
10. Let’s see.. off the top of my head.. I organized AMAs (Ask Me Anything)(s) for Mr. Barry Cooper from Don’t Get Busted, the creator of the Magic Flight Launch Box. Before I stepped down I had bigger celebrities lined-up to talk with the community.
11. I led Gone Wild and Trees to being finalists for “Community of the Year” two years running. I was also highly voted for “Moderator of the Year” for 2010 / 2011. Trees and Gone Wild are among the top 25 largest and most recognizable communities on Reddit. In addition to these two, I also crafted on Reddit the largest dating community.. r/r4r, r/portland, and an entire family of r/trees subreddits comprised of over 100 communities of various shapes and forms. Many of which went on to become huge communities each in their own rite. I even developed popular mash-up communities of mine.. r/treesgonewild and r/portlandtrees, for example.
12. I utilized and learned how to use professional survey and analytics software to help collect and analyze voluntary data from the Trees community, including our annual census starting in 2010.
13. I worked together with Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, and others to help promote an idea that raised over $2,000 in less than two weeks in May 2011 and went as a donation for the Sensible Drug Policy Alliance.

1. The Preface
When I did interviews back in August media outlets asked whether I wanted to use my real name or a pseudonym. I decided to use my real name. I wonder if anyone postulated for a second about why someone would use their real name if they thought later on they would need to protect oneself from the wrath of the Hivemind? I was inexperienced, slow, and ran into delays due to an emergency in October and some personal misfortunes. I never thought for a minute that random people on the Internet would accuse me of such vile things. Humans are emotional beings. The Hivemind effect gets out of control when users toss out logic and only use emotion and it’s been known to trash lives.
There is more to the story. People are easily manipulated by media, and social media (like reddit) is no exception. And my loved ones and I got hurt a lot.
I can share a story. One that’s not about revealing layer after layer of human weakness. Instead of destroying the subject to feast on the little bits of human weakness that remain. We seek a story that’s about revealing noble truths.
I hate to use this comparison. But what happened via reddit was just like what happens with Fox News quite frequently. People even called me you guessed it.. “Hitler” and “Kin Jung Un”. Do these sound familiar? Fox News is often known to amplify incorrect statements in a sort of bubble-like echo chamber. I believe the Hivemind has the same effect with well-intended but displaced anger and rage. You have false information that gets amplified. On one hand we had something amazing going on with the SOPA and PIPA online protests. On the other hand reddit had something totally different going on simultaneously where the Hivemind was allowed to destroy a person’s life.
2. The Story
This story begins with a found and returned wallet. On January 8 2012, I was walking with two friends along a river when I saw a wallet. I wasn’t sure though. It was just sitting on a bench next to the river. I stopped and went over to see what it was. Indeed, I swooped the wallet up. Nobody was around except for my mates. Inside the wallet was the equivalent of several hundred dollars (which is a lot for someone in my financial situation to find) and two transportation cards. I looked around to see if anyone was there. Nobody was around. Long story short, I ended up walking an hour out of my way to turn the wallet in to the local authorities. The local authorities took all of the money out and counted it and taped each bill and card to a blank sheet of paper. I was really happy to do this because I believe in good karma in real life.
Fast forward to January 14. I saw the post on Trees where anonymous posted about the affiliate links. I didn’t think affiliate links were a big deal. There are affiliate links all over reddit from top to bottom. Seeing the disgust, of course, I decided to respond. It got worse and worse to the point where people were threatening my life and the people who I love. This in contrast to a sea of generally positive or very positive and supportive private messages and e-mails I was receiving in bulk. People were afraid to post publicly anything true or even remotely positive. I admit that I did not respond elegantly due to the threats, frustration and stress. I am not experienced with this sort of thing. Though I learnt a valuable lesson in a short time about crisis management. Nevertheless, I did respond in a respectful way to people responding to me.
3. The Statement
The whole concept which I was “just another moderator” is unfair and just insane. I brought two entire communities to reddit that would not have existed without me. I carefully worked alongside the communities to build Gone Wild and Trees from nothing to everything.
The other crazy misconception here is that “reddit is free”. I did the math and from my two communities (Gone Wild and Trees), reddit inc. likely earns approximately in a week (or so) from their self-sponsored and sidebar ads what I earned in an entire year of working on Trees. The fact is that I put most of the hard work into them but reddit inc. is the major benefactor of my communities from the advertisements and affiliate links.
I believe there is a dangerous lack of foresight and oversight with reddit right now. There are rogue decisions being made never before which potentially hurts reddit inc. and especially hurts the people who are their most loyal patrons.
I had the greenlight from Mr. Erik Martin, the General Manager of reddit, to work toward forming the non-profit and also for earning funds toward this goal. There was a conversation that I had with him on October 2 2011 where he explicitly gave me permission. However, Mr. Martin did not come forth at all during the whole episode when he could have prevented the massive proliferation of false accusations. Besides, many, if not all, of the administrative staff knew of my goals and ambitions for over a year.
I have spoken regularly with one of the co-founders of reddit (who is also an adviser to reddit) regarding it. I was working rather closely with them. I had always been trying to become closer. The idea and fact that the administrative staff including the General Manager was aware of the affiliate links never came up. Then days later, reddit inc. made the unprecedented decision to remove my account and take what I had worked so hard on for over three years. Cutting me out, they are still profiting massively from my communities without offering some recourse and without being upfront to the communities about what they did.
I have kept records, screenshots, saved pages, css, graphic design and other work from over three years which I believe provides an snapshot of the timeline to the development of my communities and the amount of work that I put into Gone Wild and Trees.
4. The Background
I had an unfortunate childhood; being poor, abused and abandoned. Fortunately, I always have had good friends in my life who care about me. In the end, I finally did something positive by creating, promoting, and developing communities that people truly loved on reddit and were happy. For me reddit was always a platform. The communities became my life and all of my time and energy went into it.
I enjoyed doing what I loved. I built an entire Trees “business ecosystem” which was comprised of entrepreneurs and businesses from the community to help support them tremendously along with the work that I put into r/trees. All of a sudden, this was completely destroyed by reddit. It is so sad and ironic. Those who gave rise to my dreams also were those who crushed them.
5. The Peroration
Reddit did not keep their promises to me. They deleted my account in this unprecedented and unjustified manner.
People could see that many, if not most, of my submissions from the last year were something regarding working toward cannabis education. Almost everyone whom I spent more than five minutes talking to over the last year knew my intentions with cannabis education. It was something I brought up in nearly every conversation. I have always been passionate about cannabis education. The goal of creating an educational non-profit with the face of Trees at the forefront is still something deeply important to me. I know a lot about teaching harm reduction principles in a fun and social context. As some Ents know already, I was talking with existing cannabis non-profits in the summer and networking to learn from them in hopes of following my dream to build one specifically focused on social media and real life events. I wanted to have the best long-term strategy for success.
6. Thoughts on Ents
You do not need to be a user or even supporter of cannabis to be an Ent.
An “Ent” is not a person. It’s a culture. Ents are humans. When the greatest aspirations of a culture convene then the culture can become one of richness.
Ents are some of the friendliest and most moral people I know. This is why I created the tagline “the friendliest place on the Internet” over two years ago and had worked tirelessly to be spokesperson since August.
In the end, the benefits of being an Ent are good because we have all of the facts and logic on our side.

I find I am a little anxious as I begin this presentation. I am blowing these bubbles because they are very beautiful and they manifest the reality of everything: Our lives, and every experience are as transient and fragile as these bubbles. They come into being, do their exquisite and unique dance and then vanish.
I have a MEME.
It’s time to recognize legal recreational use of cannabis again. Just like alcohol, but safer and smarter.
I have a meme.
That one day you’ll be able to buy cannabis legally in an organic farmer’s market or 7-11, depending on preference. Or grow your own.
You’ll be called cannabis consumers or at least some of you (or all of you) already are.
Because even if you don’t purchase it, at least other adults will have the option to.
—-
Hello, I’m from the Internet.
Honestly, there are so many famous people speaking here.
<<pause>>
One thing about me.
<<pause>>
I created and have been cultivating r/trees on a web site known as Reddit. Also known as the International Cannabis Culture Education Forum, or I-CCEF.
Trees.
Who likes Trees?
Raise your hand if you like Trees.
I like Trees too!
We are a 100,000 plus community on the Internet and in real life.
We’re known as the Ents. E-N-T-S
—-
What is an Ent?
<pause>
According to several Ents, an Ent is being part of a family. You don’t have to smoke to be an Ent. Really, to be an Ent, you just need to have the right attitude. We accentuate the positives of marijuana. People want to talk smack about “stupid stoners” all the time, but being an Ent means there are people who understand the difference between silly and stupid.
—-
Now I wish to share something personal about myself.
I have long suffered from Generalized Anxiety resulting from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This stemmed from the mental abuse I got as a child. Medical cannabis isn’t the only thing that makes me feel normal, but usually it helps.
I’m like a functional stoner but only toke at specific times like before bedtime. It helps me rest and dream.
There is a Highness Scale, that Ents use from [1] to [10] in order to identify highness to each other. I generally enjoy being at a [3] or a [5] although it’s okay emotionally to go higher. Even if you are a [10] on the Trees Highness Scale (the highest you can possible be) you’re still generally safe especially if you have good people around you or in the safety of your own home or at Hempfest.
Cannabis is both medicine and safe recreationally. Medicine is not something for pharmaceutical companies to ‘label’. They peddle their wares through doctors and a non-system of haves and have-nots.
Medicine is something that works to improve health and / or quality of life. You may discover this either through Science or through your own life experiences. All of you, have the power to decide what’s a good fit for your bodies.
How nice it would be if from time-to-time if we had honest Public Service Announcements letting people know better ways to use the drugs they love more safely. It’s like driving a car. We have people go through driver’s ed and hire an instructor to learn how to properly drive a car. Well, I mean, some of us had no problems when we were 14 getting behind the wheel of our parent’s car and driving around the neighborhood and it takes time to get used to driving. But still that education we get about learning to drive is important. The same applies to using a drug. Any drug. Of course, cannabis is also an exception rather than the rule of harm reduction because pretty much even if you don’t know what you’re doing with cannabis, just about the worse that can happen is that you show up at Taco Bell at 3 am with some friends.
—-
What if we died tomorrow?
Would it really matter that we were allowed to smoke a plant?
What about the fact that we’re one species, on one planet, circling a star among billions and billions of stars?
Do you think aliens give a CRAP that we’re smoking cannabis?
People should be happy as long as they’re not hurting anyone.
—-
We need our culture to be strong. And that’s where r/trees comes in. We’re changing the world one person at a time to counteract the debilitating effects of anti-drug propaganda and prohibition on our society.
—-
Everyone 18 years or older deserves to be allowed to access cannabis.
I mean.. If you’re old enough to die for this country.. You should simply be allowed to get high for this country too.
—-
I’d like to conclude my speech with a mantra..
This was spoken by the comedian / guru Bill hicks.
The manta? “I used to do drugs, but I’ll tell you something honestly about drugs, honestly, and I know it’s not a very popular idea, you don’t hear it very often anymore, but it is the truth:
I had a great time doing drugs. Sorry.
Never murdered anyone, never robbed anyone, never beat anyone, never lost a job, a car, a house, a wife or kids, laughed my ass off, and went about my day.”
Amen.
Thank you very much Seattle!

People who are not cannabis consumers can also find joy and relate with our cannabis’s culture. Nowhere on the Internet do I think this is portrayed more real to life than on r/trees.
Trees dot Reddit dot com
100,000 “Ents” [E-N-T-S] as they’re called. You don’t necessarily need to be a toker to be an Ent. An Ent is anyone who is friendly, kind, and open minded to cannabis culture. We have the international sign of hospitality, the pineapple, as our symbol which magically appears before your eyes when you vote up or “uptoke” (as it’s affectionately known) on a story and discussion.
I’d like to read a few recent quotes from the community to show you what I mean.
“I don’t smoke. But I love getting glimpses into the minds of the Ents! You guys are hilarious! Also, not legalizing marijuana is just ridiculous. Look at the terrible things smoking cigarettes do to people, and they’re perfectly legal.”
“r/trees, I don’t even smoke but this place is like the greatest party on campus. Who wouldn’t want to hang out here? I don’t blaze at the moment, yet I still frequent this community A LOT. Currently at 8 months and 5 days of not toking and I’m trying to make it a year. And yes, I’m counting the days. Somehow this community gives me what I need!”
An Ent replies.. “If you ever start smoking again I bet it’ll feel really nice and nostalgic. Like seeing an old friend from a long time ago.”
The original poster says.. “No matter if I blaze again or not, I’ll be a stoner for life. You know, I was a stoner even before I started blazing! It’s been 8 months and I still have the same chill, laid back mentality I’ve always had.”
On another thread a person writes.. “I don’t toke, but I just wanted to thank you guys for being one of the friendliest communities around..
Seriously, you guys are awesome.”
Now.. We have so much to share with the world. You may not always be met by positive reception from people who are unfriendly with cannabis culture, but life can change. And the perception of Ents and non-Ents alike is changing everyday.
And this post by darth-tader42
“I know, only about 10 people will read this, and probably none of you will uptoke, but…
Sometimes I feel like you Ents are my previous and future incarnations. Through the years, I’ve been through every phase, every hobby, every weird mindset ever, and in between them all, I’ve always come back to Trees. You guys (and the females out there) understand me better than pretty much anyone I know in real life, and I hope I can meet all 106-thousand of you some day. I’ve pretty much restarted my life, multiple times, and the only things that remains through them is the love for my family and my love of weed.
Even though I know I’ll probably never meet most of you, I hope you have a good day, and a good week, and a good life, because everyone deserves it. I’d be honored to toke up with you guys.”
“First time browsing r/trees stoned… it was like I’d been living in Plato’s cave my whole life and I finally stepped out and saw the real world.. at a [3]”. [the [3] refers to the Highness Scale.. a scale 1 – 10 that is used to communicate with others where you are in terms of highness.]
You guys…
This one by mclovin-wu
“I just wanted to say that even though I don’t personally know any of you that you all make my day so much better. I’ve been going through a lot of ups and downs, but every time I check up on r/trees I feel better about the world knowing that you guys are out there. Keep doing what you do. It’s time for me to light up”
InternationalB replies:
“I’m right there with you man, good people on r/trees. Makes me feel like there is a lot of us out there being model stoners.”
Now. I badly want to share one final quote of an all too common theme. This post also on Trees.
Question for the Trees.. What would happen if there was a sick woman in South Carolina with Multiple Sclerosis that cannot safely access ‘trees’ [cannabis] for treatment?
I have MS and it is progressively getting worse. I’ve partook and there was a significant change in the way I felt. I had more energy, believe it or not, and the pain was significantly lessened. Why is it OK for the people in other states to have safe access and I cannot get safe access to cannabis in order to help myself? Why am I being made a criminal for getting a treatment that works when the same treatment is allowed in other states for people with the same condition? There is really no way for me to get it either as I am a 39 year old female and have no “connections” to get the stuff that can actually make me feel somewhat normal. I am on 11 prescribed medications, one is an injection that I do not know what the long-term side effects will be. How is this fair?
I hurt all the time. I have lost 65 lbs in the past year alone. One of the prescribed medications has caused a hole in my stomach. WTF can be done to help people like me? I would like to go all natural, change my diet and just vaporize if I feel an attack coming on. This seems like the best way, but the insurance companies and drug companies will never allow for this and will throw enough money at the issue to make the politicians vote for their benefit.
I live in Greenville SC, we are the charming city between Charlotte and Atlanta.
—-
Now I’d like to end on a quote from the Buddha..
Thus should you look upon this changing world.
All component things are impermanent.
All component things are subject to dissolution.
See all of this world.
As a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,
A flash of lightening in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream.
Thank you Dancesafe. Thanks to all the volunteers at Hempfest! Thank you Seattle! I’m from Trees dot Reddit dot com. Google Trees cannabis. Have fun!
